The Deco-Pour Story

Deco-Pour™ Decorative Overlayment, developed and patented in 2001, was Jim Harvey’s answer to the inconsistencies and lack of control associated with polished concrete. As Owner of Harvey Construction, Inc. in Washington State, Jim chose to address the challenges presented to the first concrete polishers, instead of being defeated by them.

Exceeding Expectations
Polished concrete was in its infancy, and at that time concrete was not expected to be anything but grey. Deco-Pour™ was developed to give the end-user the ability to receive a consistent looking integrally colored and polished floor system. In addition to working with a consistent floor, there was also the desire to be able to topically add color. The industry’s first remedy to creating topical color was to utilize acid based stains, and then acetone based dyes. These remedies brought their own issues of consistency and applicator safety. Jim took this new challenge to heart as he began working with his chemist on formulating solutions.

Responsiveness
In response to these client, specifier and applicator questions and demands, Deco-Pour™ took definitive steps toward meeting their expectations, and in doing so, addressed consistency, safety and sustainability. Following three and a half years of real-life dye applications, the most recent being over 60,000 square feet at Microsoft, Deco-Pour™ is making their Deco-Pour™ Water-based Dyes for Polished Concrete available to the industry and their clients. The Dyes are available in the top 10 nationally specified colors, in addition to the introduction of a true Warm Grey. To further provide control and options to the applicator and their client, the Deco-Pour™ System also includes an optional Tint Kit (Black, Yellow, Red and White), providing further control to the applicator to adjust shading as the concrete color changes, or to create their own custom color palette. The Dyes dramatically increase the available color palette, in addition to delivering an economic solution: on average delivering 1500 square feet per gallon at two applications. More cost effective, while at the same time being more color selective.

Sustainability
Sustainability is a commonly used word these days, and unfortunately you are subjected to a lot of “green washing” in conjunction with these claims. As concrete continues to be used as a finished surface, as with any organic finished surface, results do not meet perceived expectations of the end user. This is not the case with Deco-Pour™ and our manufacturing partners. With any concrete slab there is no guarantee of uniformity and consistency of aggregate exposure, but there are those companies that take the steps to gain greater control. For this reason we have now combined efforts with Raeco, Inc. To manufacture our Decorative Overlayment. We have found that they not only have the highest quality raw materials for cementitious concrete repair products and overlayment; they are also the leader in resourcing and using recycled materials.

In working with Raeco’s research and development team we have come up with a proprietary blend of materials that can be integrally colored, then polished’ producing a consistent aggregate exposure. For a true Portland cement-based concrete appearance, in addition to having the ability to utilize freshly washed and graded recycled concrete aggregate, Deco-Pour™ Decorative Overlayment is the only choice for achieving Consistency, Performance, Quality and Color - All in One System ... and all Sustainable! Please contact us for assistance in pursuing points on LEED and CHPS projects.
